Akoya Cultured Pearl Strand

One row of matched round Akoya pearls on silk, closed by a small gold clasp: the pearl necklace made repeatable by Mikimoto's own invention.

M/G TASAKI

Pearls sliced in half, faceted or cut into wedges, so the banded inside of the pearl becomes the ornament.

Mikimoto's Akoya cultured pearl strand prizes the pearl as an intact sphere, matched by size and lustre and graded up to The Best of The Best, a format Kokichi Mikimoto's cultured pearl of 1893 made possible. Melanie Georgacopoulos, in the line now called M/G TASAKI, first shown in Tokyo in 2012, did what the trade saw as near sacrilege: she sliced the pearl open and polished the cut face so its growth rings show like a felled tree's. The strand celebrates the pearl's skin; Sliced turns it inside out.
