Boodles

Roulette

A small ring of brilliant-cut diamonds that turns over as the wearer moves, showing diamonds on one face and plain gold, or more diamonds, on the other.

Zip

Van Cleef & Arpels

Zip

A working zip fastener in gold and stones: pull the tassel and the necklace closes up into a bracelet.

A pull or a flick, and either piece becomes something else. Draw the tassel of a Van Cleef & Arpels Zip and the necklace closes into a bracelet, a trick first made in 1950 and revived in high jewelry since 2010. Boodles' Roulette, named for the French 'little wheel', works by flipping: a circle of brilliant-cut diamonds swivels on the band or earring to show more diamonds or polished gold. The Zip transforms an entire jewel; the Roulette changes one face, as often as the wearer likes.
