Chaumet

Bee de Chaumet

The bee reduced to the cell it builds: a gold hexagon, repeated side by side into bands, hoops and pavé, with the insect itself landing only on the larger pieces.

Lucky Animals

Small animal clips built from hard-stone marquetry, malachite, tiger's eye, onyx and mother-of-pearl, each inside a contour of gold beads.

Chaumet nearly hides its insect. Bee de Chaumet rests on the hexagonal cell of the honeycomb, set side by side into bands, hoops and pavé, and the bee itself lands only on the larger pieces, an emblem the house has carried since its founder made jewels for Napoleon. Lucky Animals put the creature first. Van Cleef & Arpels assembles each one, cat, lion, rabbit, frog, from slices of malachite, carnelian, lapis or tiger's eye, outlined in gold beads. The bee works as pattern; Van Cleef's creatures work as company.
