Pi

A disc of pure 24-carat gold with a hole at its centre, hammered by hand after the bi of ancient China.

Neither disc was invented by the house that sells it. Monete sets genuine Greek and Roman coins, worn by two thousand years of hands, into heavy gold frames, a Roman habit Nicola Bulgari revived in the 1960s. Pi borrows the bi of ancient China, a jade disc pierced at the centre that stood for heaven, recast since 1991 in 24-carat gold and hammered by hand. Monete is an antique in a new mount, Pi a new jewel in an antique shape.
