Panthère de Cartier

The panther as the house's own animal: first a pattern of spots, then a whole cat in gold, lacquer, onyx and green garnet.

Butterfly

The butterfly drawn in diamonds, from a pavé outline with an open centre to full wings of pear-shape and marquise stones.

The panther crouches; the butterfly hovers. Panthère de Cartier is solid and modelled, gold and lacquer, its line traced back to 1914 and to Jeanne Toussaint, who made it the house's own animal. Graff's butterfly is lighter work, wings of pear-shape and marquise diamonds or a pavé silhouette left open in the middle. London does not date its first butterfly, whereas Paris can point to the 1948 brooch for the Duchess of Windsor that first gave the panther a body.
