The story

The motif entered Cartier's work in 1914, and Louis Cartier nicknamed his jewellery director Jeanne Toussaint 'la panthère'. Under her, the animal became fully sculpted in 1948 with a brooch made for the Duchess of Windsor. Today's rings and bracelets carry the head in gold with lacquered spots, tsavorite eyes and an onyx nose.

Lineage

  • Wladimir the Cat ring in white gold: a cat's head paved with white diamonds, green stone eyes and a green gem necklace, on a white ground.

    Animaux de Collection, Boucheron (1866)

Where Boucheron gave each animal a name, Cartier chose one and made it the house's own, first as a pattern of spots.
