Portraits of named animals (Wladimir the cat, Hopi the hummingbird, Nara the fawn) built up in pavé and coloured stones, each a single character sitting on the finger.

Panthère de Cartier

The panther as the house's own animal: first a pattern of spots, then a whole cat in gold, lacquer, onyx and green garnet.

Place Vendôme keeps two very different bestiaries. Panthère de Cartier appeared in 1914 as a pattern of spots and became a whole sculpted cat in 1948, under Jeanne Toussaint, with a brooch for the Duchess of Windsor; today it is a gold head with lacquered spots, tsavorite eyes and an onyx nose. Boucheron's Animaux de Collection have names. Wladimir the cat, mascot since the late nineteenth century, sits beside Hopi the hummingbird and Nara the fawn, each a pavé portrait. One house has an emblem; the other, a family.
