Panthère de Cartier or DoDo Nature

Panthère de Cartier
The panther as the house's own animal: first a pattern of spots, then a whole cat in gold, lacquer, onyx and green garnet.
DoDo Nature
A small flat gold animal, the dodo first of all, hung on a coloured cotton cord, each creature sold with a message of its own.
This pair runs from glamour to conservation. Panthère de Cartier showed only its spots in 1914 and took full shape in 1948, in a brooch for the Duchess of Windsor made under Jeanne Toussaint, whom Louis Cartier called la panthère. Today it is a gold head with green garnet eyes and an onyx nose. DoDo Nature's emblem is the Mauritian bird lost in the seventeenth century, struck in Milan in 1994 as a one-gram gold charm on a cotton cord. The cat is about appetite; the bird is a memorial.
