The quatrefoil and the flower

Hortensia or Lunaria

Chaumet · Marco Bicego

Hortensia

Chaumet

Hortensia

Hydrangea florets gathered into pompoms, garlands and posies, the flower repeated in gold petals, pink opal and pavé.

Lunaria

Marco Bicego

Lunaria

Flat, rounded petals modelled on the papery, moon-like seed pods of the honesty plant, in gold, diamond pavé or thin slices of mother-of-pearl and coloured stone.

Empress Joséphine's planting at Malmaison stands behind Hortensia, the high-jewelry collection Claire Dévé-Rakoff made for Chaumet in 2013, its hydrangea florets heaped into pompoms of pink opal, coral and pavé. Lunaria comes from a humbler plant, the honesty, grown for the silvery seed discs that dry on its stems; Marco Bicego flattens those discs into yellow gold, diamonds or grey mother-of-pearl.
