The quatrefoil and the flower

Hortensia or Frivole

Chaumet · Van Cleef & Arpels

Hortensia

Chaumet

Hortensia

Hydrangea florets gathered into pompoms, garlands and posies, the flower repeated in gold petals, pink opal and pavé.

Frivole

Van Cleef & Arpels

Frivole

A flower of heart-shaped petals in gold polished to a mirror, so smooth the bare metal throws light like a stone.

Frivole's petals are hearts, finished by hand to the mirror polish Van Cleef & Arpels has used since the 1920s, so the gold alone throws the light. The house made them a collection in 2003, arranging the blossoms off-centre. Chaumet's Hortensia, a decade later, lets stones do more of the work, filling hydrangea florets with pink opal, coral and pavé. Both houses cluster flowers rather than isolate them, Frivole in reflective metal, Hortensia in soft colour.
