The quatrefoil and the flower

Sunflower or Frivole

Sunflower

Harry Winston

Sunflower

Eight matched stones ring a single round brilliant like petals around a seed head, laid out with a compass for strict symmetry.

Frivole

Van Cleef & Arpels

Frivole

A flower of heart-shaped petals in gold polished to a mirror, so smooth the bare metal throws light like a stone.

Frivole was made to look a little careless. Its heart-shaped petals of mirror-polished gold sit in loose, asymmetric clusters, a collection Van Cleef & Arpels built in 2003 on a petal it had used since the 1940s. Harry Winston's Sunflower allows no such play: one round brilliant, eight matched stones, symmetry checked with a compass in the New York studio in 1950. Gold scattered, stones ringed: two flowers could hardly be built more differently.
