The quatrefoil and the flower

Frivole or Calla

Van Cleef & Arpels · Vhernier

Frivole

Van Cleef & Arpels

Frivole

A flower of heart-shaped petals in gold polished to a mirror, so smooth the bare metal throws light like a stone.

Calla

Vhernier

Calla

One smooth cone, furled like a calla lily, hung alone on a necklace whose clasp disappears.

Frivole and Calla are both left as bare, polished gold, though one multiplies its surfaces and the other keeps a single one. Van Cleef & Arpels finishes each heart-shaped Frivole petal by hand to a mirror, a polish it has used since the 1920s, and has scattered the flowers in loose clusters since 2003. Vhernier's Calla is one smooth cone, furled like a lily in rose or white gold, made since 1998.
