The gold band

Macri or Perlée

Buccellati · Van Cleef & Arpels

Macri

Buccellati

Macri

Yellow and white gold engraved with thousands of hair-fine parallel rigato lines that catch light like silk moiré, starred with diamonds set in tiny rosettes.

Perlée

Van Cleef & Arpels

Perlée

The house's oldest ornament, the polished gold bead, made into the whole jewel: bangles, rings and hoops lined with rows of tiny golden spheres.

Macri's texture is cut into the gold; Perlée's stands up from it. Buccellati engravers draw thousands of fine parallel lines across yellow and white gold, the rigato that gives Macri its silken sheen, then set small diamonds in star-shaped mounts. Van Cleef & Arpels raises rows of polished beads instead, an ornament found on its jewels from the 1920s and given its own line in 2008. One is a field of light; the other, a string of points.
