Tulle

Buccellati

Tulle

A half-millimetre sheet of gold pierced by hand into hundreds of minute hexagonal cells, so the metal reads like net lace.

Iconica Large ring: a wide, smooth rose-gold band with rounded edges and the Pomellato signature engraved inside, on a pale grey ground.

Pomellato

Iconica

A wide gold band with rounded, pillowy edges and the Pomellato signature engraved inside, made in widths from extra-slim to bold so several can crowd one finger.

Tulle starts from a gold sheet half a millimetre thin, and Buccellati's goldsmiths saw hundreds of hexagonal holes through it, a 1920s technique after Venetian lace. Pomellato, in the same city, goes the other way with Iconica, thickening the profile of its first band ring until the edges swell; an outsized Iconica Maxi even shaped the gilt handles on the house's boutique doors. One makes gold weigh almost nothing to the eye; the other makes a point of its mass.
