Tulle

A half-millimetre sheet of gold pierced by hand into hundreds of minute hexagonal cells, so the metal reads like net lace.

Elsa Peretti Bone Cuff

A cuff modelled on the bones of the wrist, its edges rolled and its surface dipped, so the metal reads as anatomy rather than ornament.

Venice lent Mario Buccellati his idea in the 1920s: the floral needle lace of the lagoon, translated into gold sheet pierced with hundreds of tiny hexagons. Elsa Peretti took hers from the body, the wrist bones she modelled in 1970. Tulle is nearly weightless to the eye, its metal a fraction of a millimetre thick and more air than gold; the Bone Cuff is dense and continuous, a single cast shape holding the arm. Both designers were Italian; one idea stayed in Milan, the other went to New York.
