The gold band

Tulle or Tubogas

Buccellati · Bulgari

Tulle

Buccellati

Tulle

A half-millimetre sheet of gold pierced by hand into hundreds of minute hexagonal cells, so the metal reads like net lace.

Tubogas

Bulgari

Tubogas

A band of gold wound tightly round itself like the flexible pipe of a gas line, tubo gas, so it springs round the wrist or neck without a hinge.

Half a millimetre thick, the gold sheet behind Tulle is pierced by hand into hundreds of hexagonal cells, work that can occupy a Buccellati goldsmith for close to a month before an engraver finishes it. Mario Buccellati took the idea from Venetian needle lace in the 1920s. Tubogas, made in Rome in 1941, is all density by comparison: a band wound tight on itself into a coil that springs round the wrist. One is gold behaving like fabric, the other like industrial hose.
