Giardino

A four-petalled flower in openwork gold with a lace edge, set with one stone at its heart, taken from the gardens of Isola Madre on Lake Maggiore.

Isola Madre, the half-wild island garden on Lake Maggiore, gave Laure-Isabelle Mellerio her Giardino: a four-petalled openwork flower with a lace edge and one coloured stone at its heart. Chaumet's Hortensia remembers a different garden, Joséphine's at Malmaison, through hydrangea florets heaped into pompoms. Each was shaped by a woman directing design on the Place Vendôme, Claire Dévé-Rakoff at Chaumet from 2012. Together they show two ways a garden survives in gold: as a single remembered bloom, or as a whole bed of them.
