The quatrefoil and the flower

Hortensia or Bouton d'or

Hortensia

Hortensia

Hydrangea florets gathered into pompoms, garlands and posies, the flower repeated in gold petals, pink opal and pavé.

Bouton d'or

Little discs of gold, each with a stone at its centre, massed in rows and rings like the head of a buttercup.

Rows of polished gold discs, each with a stone at its centre, make the buttercup head of Bouton d'or, a 1936 Van Cleef & Arpels sequin motif revived in 2016. Chaumet's Hortensia from 2013 masses florets instead, hydrangea petals in gold, opal and pavé gathered into posies. The buttercup, bold and gold-led, is close kin to 1930s evening dress, and Chaumet's pastel hydrangea belongs to Joséphine's Malmaison.
