Sunflower

Eight matched stones ring a single round brilliant like petals around a seed head, laid out with a compass for strict symmetry.

Bouton d'or

Van Cleef & Arpels

Bouton d'or

Little discs of gold, each with a stone at its centre, massed in rows and rings like the head of a buttercup.

Gold discs or matched stones: two ways of building a flower from repeated round parts. Van Cleef & Arpels' Bouton d'or, revived in 2016 from a 1936 sequin motif, packs polished yellow-gold discs, each with a stone at its centre, into rows and rings like a buttercup's head. Harry Winston's Sunflower, from 1950, arranges exactly eight stones around a single brilliant in platinum. The result is a dense, warm buttercup beside a spare, measured, white sunflower.
