The quatrefoil and the flower

Margherita

Damiani

Margherita

A daisy, margherita in Italian, set in diamonds and named for the queen whose name it shares.

Frivole

Van Cleef & Arpels

Frivole

A flower of heart-shaped petals in gold polished to a mirror, so smooth the bare metal throws light like a stone.

Frivole lets gold, not diamonds, catch the light. Each heart-shaped petal is polished by hand to a mirror, sometimes around a diamond centre, in a collection Van Cleef & Arpels began in 2003. Damiani's Margherita does the opposite: a daisy of diamonds in white gold, its story starting with a jewel made for Margherita of Savoy in the 1920s. Polished metal is set against pavé, whimsy against a royal dedication.
