The quatrefoil and the flower

Sunflower

Eight matched stones ring a single round brilliant like petals around a seed head, laid out with a compass for strict symmetry.

Alhambra

Van Cleef & Arpels

Alhambra

A four-leaf clover cut from stone and ringed with a double row of gold beads, repeated along a chain like a string of charms.

Plants become emblems here, simple enough to repeat. Harry Winston fixed the Sunflower in 1950 as eight matched stones around one, spaced with a compass and set in platinum. Van Cleef & Arpels drew the Alhambra in 1968 as a four-leaf clover in hard stone, framed by a double row of gold beads and threaded along chains. Winston arranges gems, white or coloured, and Van Cleef & Arpels fills a silhouette with onyx, malachite or mother-of-pearl.
