The story

The name and the cut come from the French for sugarloaf, and the palette from the South American light that stayed with the Argentine-born Fred Samuel. Introduced in 2013, the ring takes removable cabochons in topaz, rose quartz, amethyst, turquoise, mother-of-pearl or ebony that click into a gold mount, and the idea has spread to necklaces, earrings and bracelets.

Lineage

  • Nudo Classic ring: a square faceted garnet in a white-gold collet on a thin rose-gold band, on a pale grey ground.

    Nudo, Pomellato (2001)

Pain de Sucre shares Nudo's taste for colour over fire and raises it into a tall sugarloaf cabochon that can be changed at will.

  • Piaget Solstice high jewellery ring in gold: stacked bands carrying a large cushion-cut pink centre stone with smaller coloured gems and diamonds, on a pale portrait panel within a transparent square.

    Piaget Solstice, Piaget (2022)

Solstice gives the big coloured stone a garnish that comes away, so one ring can be worn dressed or bare.
