The quatrefoil and the flower

Opera or Frivole

Buccellati · Van Cleef & Arpels

Opera

Buccellati

Opera

The Buccellati emblem, a four-petalled rosette of winding lines, cut out and worn as the jewel itself: in engraved gold, in diamond pavé, or laid over a pierced tulle lattice.

Frivole

Van Cleef & Arpels

Frivole

A flower of heart-shaped petals in gold polished to a mirror, so smooth the bare metal throws light like a stone.

Mirror polish and hand engraving treat the same material in opposite ways. Van Cleef & Arpels polishes Frivole's heart-shaped petals until the bare metal throws light like a stone, a collection since 2003 built on clips of the 1940s. Buccellati breaks the light up instead, engraving the winding lines of its rosette emblem into the gold for Opera, which was shown in Paris in 2015, and laying it over pierced tulle.
