The gold band

Tulle or Marrakech

Tulle

Buccellati

Tulle

A half-millimetre sheet of gold pierced by hand into hundreds of minute hexagonal cells, so the metal reads like net lace.

Marrakech

Marco Bicego

Marrakech

Fine 18k gold wire wound into tight springy coils, gathered into strands that flex and drape against the wrist and throat like fabric.

Light passes through Tulle. A Buccellati goldsmith saws a thin plate into a honeycomb of hexagonal cells, the technique Mario Buccellati drew from Venetian lace in the 1920s, and an engraver finishes the lattice, which now carries eternity bands such as Tulle Ghirlanda. Marrakech is dense by comparison, fine gold wire wound into tight coils by hand, a method Marco Bicego brought from his father's chain workshop in Trissino, so the strands flex like knitted cloth.
