Belle Époque

Round diamonds alternating with rubies, sapphires or emeralds round a band, like frames on a reel of film running past.

Perlée

Van Cleef & Arpels

Perlée

The house's oldest ornament, the polished gold bead, made into the whole jewel: bangles, rings and hoops lined with rows of tiny golden spheres.

Round the band of Belle Époque, diamonds run against coloured gems, frame after frame like film; Perlée couleurs sets carnelian or malachite between rows of polished gold beads. Both, in other words, alternate. Damiani's line looks back to 1920s Paris, sketched by Enrico Grassi Damiani after a visit. Van Cleef & Arpels' bead looks back into its own workshop, where it was edging jewels in that same decade. Damiani counts in stones, Van Cleef & Arpels in spheres of gold.
