The quatrefoil and the flower

Lily Cluster or Frivole

Lily Cluster

Harry Winston

Lily Cluster

Interlacing petals of small pavé-set round diamonds, accented with a single marquise, form a lily caught mid-bloom.

Frivole

Van Cleef & Arpels

Frivole

A flower of heart-shaped petals in gold polished to a mirror, so smooth the bare metal throws light like a stone.

Frivole and Lily Cluster reach everyday scale by opposite means. Van Cleef & Arpels gave its heart-petal flower a collection in 2003, with petals of bare gold polished by hand until they reflect like glass, set in deliberately lopsided clusters. Harry Winston's 2010 lily keeps the metal out of sight beneath hand-set round diamonds, interlaced petals and a marquise drawn from studio sketches of the 1940s. Frivole trusts the surface of gold; the lily trusts the stone.
