The story

Jean Schlumberger, son of an Alsatian textile family, designed Sixteen Stone as a wedding ring in 1959, three years after he joined Tiffany. The Xs come from the needlework cross-stitch, a mark that joins, and they set the diamonds two by two. The motif has since spread to bracelets, pendants and earrings with varying stone counts, in platinum with or without 18k yellow gold.

Schlumberger stitched his diamonds in place with little gold Xs; Liens makes the crossed X the whole sign.
