Jeux de Rubans

Ribbons of pavé white gold or plain pink gold loop and cross behind a single Akoya pearl, as if a present had just been tied.

Two Jean Schlumberger Sixteen Stone rings, one in 18k yellow gold and platinum and one in platinum, round diamonds held by small crossed Xs, on a Tiffany Blue ground.

Jean Schlumberger by Tiffany Sixteen Stone

Pairs of round diamonds held in place by small gold Xs, like cross-stitches, so the band reads as stones threaded together with metal.

Haberdashery supplied both. Mikimoto's Jeux de Rubans folds ribbons of pavé white gold or plain pink gold behind a round Akoya pearl, like the bow on a wrapped gift. Jean Schlumberger, raised in an Alsatian textile family, took the cross-stitch for Tiffany's Sixteen Stone in 1959, using small gold Xs to pin diamonds in pairs round a wedding band. Each is, at heart, a small act of fastening borrowed from the sewing box and carried out in precious metal.
