Africa

Slightly lopsided beads of 18k yellow gold, each scored by hand with a burin into thousands of fine lines, strung in graduated rows so the satin surface glows rather than shines.

Parallel lines cut by hand cover both. Buccellati calls its version rigato: on Macri, conceived by Gianmaria Buccellati and named for his daughter Maria Cristina, the chisel strokes in yellow and white gold catch light like moiré silk, with diamonds set in small stars. Marco Bicego's Africa uses millerighe, a burin drawn across rounded gold beads until they feel like silk, and keeps the beads a little lopsided to show the hand.
