Africa

Slightly lopsided beads of 18k yellow gold, each scored by hand with a burin into thousands of fine lines, strung in graduated rows so the satin surface glows rather than shines.

The torques of the ancient world, which David Yurman has cited from the Metropolitan Museum's galleries, stand behind the Cable Collection: in 1982 the sculptor twisted strands of metal into a helix, bent it into an open cuff and capped the ends with stones. Africa looks to an engraver's tool rather than a museum case. Marco Bicego's burin cuts fine lines into rounded gold beads, left uneven on purpose, until they read as satin.
