Buccellati

Opera

The Buccellati emblem, a four-petalled rosette of winding lines, cut out and worn as the jewel itself: in engraved gold, in diamond pavé, or laid over a pierced tulle lattice.

Van Cleef & Arpels

Bouton d'or

Little discs of gold, each with a stone at its centre, massed in rows and rings like the head of a buttercup.

Bouton d'or is the newer collection of the two by a year, yet its motif is older: Van Cleef & Arpels first set gold discs with a central stone in 1936, close cousins of evening-dress sequins, and revived them in 2016 as buttercup heads. Opera, from 2015, is new in form and old in source, Buccellati's rosette emblem drawn from Renaissance and Baroque ornament and worn whole for the first time.
