Little discs of gold, each with a stone at its centre, massed in rows and rings like the head of a buttercup.
Tesserae and sequins: each of these 2016 lines builds its image from small repeated units. Van Cleef & Arpels revived its 1936 Paillettes motif as Bouton d'or, gold discs each centred on a stone, massed like a buttercup head with onyx, carnelian or chrysoprase. Bulgari's Divas' Dream takes its unit from Roman mosaic, the ginkgo-leaf fan of the Baths of Caracalla, and grades pink sapphires across it like tiles.
