Serrure

A bangle of springy gold wire, one end flattened by a hammer stroke into a clasp shaped like a lock.

Hardware reduced to a gesture: in 1975 Jean Dinh Van hammered the end of a gold wire flat for Serrure, cut it into the shape of a lock, then left the bangle to spring open and shut by itself. Écrou de Cartier, presented in 2017, keeps far more of the workshop, a slim gold cable cut with a screw thread and strung with hexagonal nuts that look ready for a spanner. Between them lies the whole range of hardware jewelry, from a hint to a replica.
