Serrure

A bangle of springy gold wire, one end flattened by a hammer stroke into a clasp shaped like a lock.

Force 10

A length of braided steel marine cable closed by a gold shackle, named after a storm on the Beaufort scale.

No hinge and no catch: that was the brief Jean Dinh Van set himself for Serrure in 1975. The gold wire is worked until it opens and springs back, and one end is hammered flat and cut into the outline of a lock. Force 10, nine years older, takes its suppleness from braided marine cable and keeps a working closure, a U-shaped gold shackle that clips on and lifts off, so cables can be swapped by colour. Two Parisian readings of hardware: one drawn in the metal, one rigged.
