LOVE

A rigid oval of gold closed by two working screws, so the bracelet goes on with a screwdriver and stays on.

Serrure bangle in brushed yellow gold: a slim open band whose flattened end forms a keyhole-shaped clasp, on a white ground.

Serrure

A bangle of springy gold wire, one end flattened by a hammer stroke into a clasp shaped like a lock.

Mechanism is what divides these bangles. LOVE, drawn by Aldo Cipullo at Cartier New York in 1969, is fastened by two working screws and comes off only with a screwdriver. Serrure, which Jean Dinh Van made in Paris in 1975, has no moving part at all: the gold wire is worked until it can part and close on its own, and one hammered end is cut into the outline of a lock. In LOVE the hardware works. In Serrure it is drawn.
