Menottes dinh van

Two gold half-rings that hook into each other like handcuffs, so the clasp becomes the whole jewel.

The 1970s gave hardware to jewelry twice in quick succession. Juste un Clou came first, in 1971, when Aldo Cipullo at Cartier New York bent a gold nail into a bangle. Menottes followed in Paris in 1976, Jean Dinh Van's pair of half-rings hooked together like handcuffs. Each has long outlived its decade: Cartier renamed the nail and revived it in 2012, growing it into rings and torque necklaces, and the little cuffs now hang from cords, chains and strings of pearls.
