Two gold half-rings that hook into each other like handcuffs, so the clasp becomes the whole jewel.

Force 10

A length of braided steel marine cable closed by a gold shackle, named after a storm on the Beaufort scale.

Jewellers usually hide the clasp. Here it is the whole jewel. On Menottes, Jean Dinh Van's design of 1976, two gold half-rings hook into each other like handcuffs and hang from a cord, a chain or a string of pearls. On Force 10, exactly a decade older, the closure is a sailor's U-shaped shackle in gold gripping a length of steel marine cable. Both have multiplied since, Menottes into rings and sizes from baby to man, Force 10 into cables in a range of colours.
