LOVE

A rigid oval of gold closed by two working screws, so the bracelet goes on with a screwdriver and stays on.

Perlée

Van Cleef & Arpels

Perlée

The house's oldest ornament, the polished gold bead, made into the whole jewel: bangles, rings and hoops lined with rows of tiny golden spheres.

Cartier's LOVE turns the screw head into ornament: two working screws close a rigid gold oval, drawn by Aldo Cipullo in New York in 1969, with the head repeated all round. Perlée makes Van Cleef & Arpels' oldest ornament the subject. The house had edged its pieces with polished gold beads since the 1920s and framed the Alhambra clover with them; in 2008 the beads became whole bangles and rings, polished on the back as well as the front. Each piece is one small element, multiplied into a jewel.
