One stone raised on four claws above a plain band, the house's barest answer to the engagement ring.

Joséphine

A diadem shrunk to the finger: a pear-cut stone rising from scrolled arcs, the way an aigrette rises from a tiara.

Restraint against ceremony. Solitaire 1895 asks nothing of its setting beyond four claws and a plain band, Cartier's barest answer to the engagement ring, holding a diamond or a sapphire, ruby or emerald. Joséphine, created by Chaumet in 2010 for its 230th anniversary, borrows the whole vocabulary of the diadem, lifting a pear-cut stone on curling arcs like an aigrette on a tiara, in honour of the empress who was the house's most famous early client. One ring removes. The other remembers.
