Joséphine

A diadem shrunk to the finger: a pear-cut stone rising from scrolled arcs, the way an aigrette rises from a tiara.

Le Cube Diamant

A round diamond held inside an open gold cube, the circle set against the square.

Solids and voids interested Jean Dinh Van, and in 1971 he framed a brilliant in a cube of gold left open on every side, circle against square, for Le Cube Diamant. Joséphine came out of two hundred years of tiaras. In 2010 Chaumet took the diadem's scrolls and aigrettes and shrank them to the finger, rising to a pear-cut stone, one ring going through 25 prototypes before it stopped looking like a toy. Paris produced both, forty years and a world of taste apart.
