Joséphine

A diadem shrunk to the finger: a pear-cut stone rising from scrolled arcs, the way an aigrette rises from a tiara.

Serti sur Vide ring in white gold: two open bands joined by a short bar, with a pear-cut diamond held above them, on a light grey ground.

Serti sur Vide

A diamond held on a hidden bar so it seems to hover above the finger or the ear, with nothing visible beneath it.

Architecture is added to the stone in one and taken away in the other. For Joséphine, in 2010, Chaumet scaled down two centuries of diadems, so a pear-shaped stone springs from curved gold like the plume on a tiara; Lionel Giraud spent two and a half years on it. For Serti sur Vide, in 2014, Gaia Repossi took her father's idea and hid the structure entirely, so the diamond floats over the finger. The crown makes a stage, and the hidden bar makes the stage vanish.
