A diadem shrunk to the finger: a pear-cut stone rising from scrolled arcs, the way an aigrette rises from a tiara.

The Tiffany Setting

Six slender prongs lift a round brilliant diamond clear of the band, so the stone, not the mount, carries the ring.

Two centuries of diadems went into Joséphine. Chaumet created the ring for its 230th anniversary in 2010, raising a pear-cut stone from scrolled arcs the way an aigrette rises from a tiara; Lionel Giraud spent two and a half years on it, and one version went through 25 prototypes. The Tiffany Setting, from 1886, took ornament away instead, holding a round brilliant on six prongs. Joséphine brings imperial crowns to the hand; Tiffany's ring became the outline most people now draw.
