Le Cube Diamant

A round diamond held inside an open gold cube, the circle set against the square.

Raising a stone and enclosing it are opposite ideas, and these two rings take one each. Solitaire 1895 is Cartier's barest engagement ring, one stone on four claws above a plain band, named for the year its first solitaire appears in the archives. Le Cube Diamant, made by Jean Dinh Van in 1971, sets a round diamond inside an open gold cube, framed by edges and voids rather than lifted on points. The claws let the stone stand; the cube builds a small architecture round it.
