Solitaire 1895

One stone raised on four claws above a plain band, the house's barest answer to the engagement ring.

The Tiffany Setting

Six slender prongs lift a round brilliant diamond clear of the band, so the stone, not the mount, carries the ring.

Six prongs in New York, four claws in Paris. Charles Lewis Tiffany introduced the Tiffany Setting in 1886, lifting a round brilliant clear of the band so light could reach it from every side, at a time when engagement stones sat low in ornate gold. Cartier names its Solitaire 1895 after the year a solitaire first appears in its archives, and today sets a diamond, or a sapphire, ruby or emerald, on four claws. Each strips the ring to stone and band; the count of prongs is the signature.
