The Tiffany Setting

Six slender prongs lift a round brilliant diamond clear of the band, so the stone, not the mount, carries the ring.

Showing as little metal as possible was the aim of the Tiffany Setting in 1886: six slender prongs lift a round brilliant above the band. Le Cube Diamant, made by Jean Dinh Van in 1971, shows the metal on purpose, enclosing the diamond in an open gold cube so the circle is read against the square. Tiffany frees the stone from its mount, and the cube makes the mount part of the drawing.
