Le Petit Cactus

The flower of the vanilla cactus, which opens for one night a year, made as a small burst of rose gold stamens around a single stone.

Bouton d'or

Van Cleef & Arpels

Bouton d'or

Little discs of gold, each with a stone at its centre, massed in rows and rings like the head of a buttercup.

The past is the material here. Bouton d'or comes from Van Cleef & Arpels' own archive, a 1936 motif of gold discs with a stone at the centre, revived in 2016 as massed buttercup heads. Le Petit Cactus comes from Mellerio's longer memory: Marie-Antoinette, the house's first royal client, and the vanilla cactus Redouté painted at her request, drawn by Laure-Isabelle Mellerio in 2019. In the hand, the buttercup is dense with polished discs, the cactus flower a single burst of rose-gold stamens.
