Hundreds of tiny rings, each coiled by hand from twisted gold thread and linked like the flowers of a lei, so a necklace moves like knitted cord.

Pepita

Gold beads shaped like pebbles worn smooth by the sea, each a little irregular, threaded into bracelets, rings and earrings meant for anyone.

In the 1930s Mario Buccellati based Hawaii on the flower leis of the islands, coiling hundreds of tiny rings from twisted gold thread and linking each by hand; later pieces weave in opal, chalcedony or jade. DoDo's Pepita, from 2000, models its gold beads on pebbles worn by water and wind. Hawaii's surface is almost textile, a mesh that drapes. Pepita's is smooth and separate, bead after bead, as if the sea had finished each one.
