Hawaii

Hundreds of tiny rings, each coiled by hand from twisted gold thread and linked like the flowers of a lei, so a necklace moves like knitted cord.

Skinny rivière bracelet in white gold: a thin flexible line of diamonds forming a bangle, with a fine safety chain, on a pale grey ground.

Skinny

A rivière of diamonds made elastic: tiny springs between the settings let the line twist, stretch over the hand and close back round the wrist.

Hawaii moves like knitted cord because of hand labour: Mario Buccellati, drawing it in the 1930s, built it from hundreds of tiny rings, each coiled from twisted gold thread and joined to the next by hand. Skinny moves because of a hidden device. Valérie Messika developed it in 2009 with nano springs between the diamond settings, so the rivière can twist, stretch over the hand and recover. A goldsmith's patience in Milan, an engineering problem in Paris, and in both cases metal that drapes.
