Tulle or Ice Cube

Tulle

Buccellati

Tulle

A half-millimetre sheet of gold pierced by hand into hundreds of minute hexagonal cells, so the metal reads like net lace.

Ice Cube

A band divided into small gold cubes with chamfered edges, so light breaks across it like ice.

Tulle's unit is a tiny hexagon, sawn by hand through thin gold sheet; Ice Cube's is a small square block, separated from its neighbours by grooves cut with diamond-tipped tools. Mario Buccellati developed his openwork in the 1920s after Venetian lace, and a single plate can take a month. Chopard launched its cubes in 1999 as something graphic and androgynous. Light passes through the one and bounces off the other.
