Tubogas

A band of gold wound tightly round itself like the flexible pipe of a gas line, tubo gas, so it springs round the wrist or neck without a hinge.

Elsa Peretti Bone Cuff

A cuff modelled on the bones of the wrist, its edges rolled and its surface dipped, so the metal reads as anatomy rather than ornament.

Neither bracelet needs a hinge, and they reach that freedom from opposite directions. Bulgari's Tubogas of 1941 borrowed the flexible tubing of a gas line: gold wound so tightly on itself that the coil springs open and closes again round the arm. Elsa Peretti's Bone Cuff, drawn in 1970, came from the Capuchin Crypt in Rome, where she had seen bones as a child. One is engineering made supple; the other is anatomy, cast in silver or gold and shaped to sit over the wrist bone.
